Bax

(Scene: Fenceline, muggy evening, Mr. ABF greets new neighbor and one of her three kids.)

Mr. ABF: "I'm [Mr. ABF] by the way . . . "

Neighbor: "Oh, I remember! You're [Mr. ABF] and Tash, and your daughter is Bella, and your dog . . . your dog is . . . . Maddy?

Mr. ABF: ???!!!!?????

Neighbor: "No wait, Max. Max and Buddy. Isn't that funny, I combined them!"

:::

Mr. ABF walked over where I was lovingly grilling our salmon dinner and recounted this by beginning, "So I just had a weird encounter." And we both wound up laughing so hard there were tears. Our collective sense of humor has indeed twisted.

  2. It's a joke only those in the know can ever get. Or laugh at.

  3. Oof.

A story in the same vein:

For my first Christmas since we lost Iris, my mother-in-law gave me...

    iris scented soap-on-a-rope.

Because there's no better time to remember your dead baby than when you're washing your armpits!

  4. what can i say? it's funny...and the laughter...i think one can only laugh that hard and twisted when there's a river of shit running underneath. it's funny to us, or we die. i recently started using the term 'maniacally' to describe that kind of laughter. (i love that it's usually reserved for grotesque killers and stuff...HA!...but isn't dead babies what they usually flash back to in the movies anyway??!! you know, to explain how they became grotesque killers?)

  5. It's one of those situations where you're either gonna laugh or cry. Laughing is usually better. I'll bet if your neighbour ever found out, she'd be mortified.

  7. Yeah, what Debbie said.

It took me far too long to realise that fenceline was I word that I know. In my head I was reading it as "fence-uh-line". Goodness. I need coffee.

  16. That is freaky. I am glad you can laugh. A sick sense of humour is most essential.

  17. Oh man. I totally get that sense of humor. I mean, really, what are the chances that THAT would come out of her mouth? Sheesh.

  19. It's funny, isn't it? It all depends on your mood doesn't it? I've had ones like this which have just been riotously funny - but on another day I could have been really upset. But I think that when you do have a day when you can see the funny side then that's a good sign. With love, Alice
